I hate the look of the AO deck...just ugly and boring. Honestly, it looks like they just found some chinese dexk and made a plastic grind plate for it.
Either way i think the grind plate idea is great and i might have to make a grind plate for my Orion.
Delrin (Acetal) would be a great choice if you wanted to make your own grind plate...its super slippery and extremely durable. You can buy it in any size, thickness online from McMaster Carr or MSC. They even make Teflon infused Delrin that is extremely slippery.

Just looked that up, and one sheet cut to size would be almost 40 dollars!
