I used a hammer on my fork, the worst that happened was paint chips, but if you hammer mostly on the back of the fork nobody will see it. Or if you have a black fork nobody will see it. When putting a new one on use a headset spacer or a gyro plate you don't use so you arent hitting where the bearings touch the race.
