[moved] why are sr forks welded halfway down the steerertube?

i have never gotten a good, straight answer to this.

my ooooold ass reinforced one is finally on its way out after like 2 years :(( i loved it

Because it's easier and quicker for Andrew to machine the crown race ring section with a shorter forktube, then he just welds on the rest of the fork tube.
 
Yes, and that way he doesn't have to get two different things machined when he makes a threadless and threaded version. For the threaded, he just welded on a threaded tube to the threadless section.
