Either hand draw or make your template on some form of design software. Then trim out the design and attach it to the backside of the grip tape backing paper. Remember that if it is a name or word you will need to flip/invert/mirror it so it will read correctly on the top side. Once the template is attached securely take a Sharpie fine point and trace the design onto the backing paper and remove template. When doing detailed designs I like to use hash marks to clearly mark what is staying and what needs to be trimmed out. Once you are happy with your design take an Exacto knife and a new #11 blade to cut/trim out the design. I like to use a cutting mat underneath, however a plastic cutting board works well also. The grip portion of the tape will dull the blades quickly, do not be surprised if you use 3-5 when you cut out the design. I have found that the 2 most important things that determine how crisp your cutlines turn out are keeping the workpiece secured and stable while cutting as well as using a sharp blade to limit tearing of the material when you cut it.
