Questions regarding firewire/HV30

I have a pretty old computer, one that does not have any firewire ports. I plan on getting one of those firewire card things that you can install but I am concerned with the speed of my computer not performing well with firewire. So my question is, does the performance of a computer affect its abilitly to capture footage via firewire? I am running Windows XP by the way.

I want to know before I order a Canon HV30 because I'd be pretty bummed if I bought that and found out i couldn't capture footage with my computer.


P.S. Does the SD mode on the HV30 work well? I'm going to edit with WMM for a while, then I'll upgrade when I get a new laptop or new program.

I'd reccomend having atleast 512mb RAM and a decent processor for editing SD.

I wouldn't even fuck with HD if your computer isn't pretty bango.

I only plan on using HD when I get a new laptop. We have 512mb RAM right now, and I have no idea on the qualitly of the processor. I have editied pretty low qualitly footage with WMM before, but that was from some crappy USB camera.

One more question, does Sony Vegas 9 require a pretty fast computer? like more than 512mb RAM?

the sd on the hv30 is very choppy. its only for an emergency. but get the hv30. its amazing

I plan on using the SD mode until I get a laptop so I hope it works well. How does it compare to regular SD camcorders?

well to camcorders like the hf200 it isnt too great, but compared to cheaper sd camcorders its still better.

ohh well it looks good to me. I figured I would get the good HD camera now and just use the SD mode until I get a laptop instead of buying a SD camera now, and an HD camera later.

Does anyone have a scooter video shot with an hv30 in the SD mode?

^^^ don't record in SD mode, just import the HD footage like you would normally would with an SD camera. The footage wont be HD, but it might possibly look nicer then the SD mode.

I have a windows XP, and it can handle Vegas but only when I have nothing else running. It took a damn long time to install though hahaha
