Ceramic Bearing + WD-40?

Hi guys.

I just cleaned ONLY THE OUTSIDE, of my Ceramic bearings because they had some baked on dirt on the outside of it...

I sprayed some WD-40 on a rag and then just wiped them.

Im guessing that some WD-40 would have got in there, and now im worried that i could have stuffed them up? Will they be ok? Does WD-40 do anything to them?

Thanks..

get some carb cleaner and spray your bearings down really good. then use some bones speed cream($5 for a bottle) and the bearings will run like new.

Hi,

Real Ceramic bearings do not need any grease or oil. Its even better NOT to use any lubricant on them.
When your bearings are dirty you just clean them with Hot water and some soap (carwash). Then carefully dry them till all moisture is gone.(be sure ALL water is gone)
Best way to clean is to remove both SEALS.
Normally Ceramic bearings have (when its really quality Ceramic bearings), Delrin ball cages that hold the balls.
Delrin is a special plastics. You can remove all balls out of the Delrin cage easy. When doing that you can clean each part carefully (balls, cage, inner and outerrings). Assamble the bearing again and your ready.
If you do not like the noise of DRY bearings then ONLY use TEFLON (PTFE) oil !!!!!! never any other oil or grease !!
Oh,For general bearinguse: Oil make the bearings runs faster, Grease will lubricant better but slows down the spinningspeed.

For Ceramic bearings there are some different ones on the market. When you have Zr02 Balls (white balls) then you have the cheapest ceramic bearings with the SOFTER ceramic balls. these can use some (teflon)oil to make the bearing last longer. When you have Si3N4 (Black Balls) then you have the highest grade ceramic balls, those you absolute do not need to oil just clean them as much as possible.

Forgot:

Offcourse you can use a petrol of even better a non toxic citrussolvent to clean your bearings, but be sure you dry them well and oil them imidiatly because within 12 hours you will have "fly-rust" on the metal when you do not oil them !
Thats why we use high grade 440 stainless steel for the ceramic bearing inner and outer rings = no rust problem!
NEVER use a Silicon oil or grease !! that will attrackt to much dirt with makes your bearing run down way faster !

Thanks marcel, sounds good...

I will use petrol to clean them, then you said to oil them orthey will get rust on them, but in the post before you said not to use any oil?? What oil do i use to stop rust, and how do i do it?!

Cheers ;)

Eeek i wouldn't use petrol, use something a little less invasive like mineral turpentine. Soak them and get all the shit outta them with than then dry them off well(I use compressed air but a clean cloth or rag will do) then put a few drops of either just like the 3 in 1 oil you can buy or an actual wheel bearing lubricant such as that Speed Cream stuff on them.

Its preferable not o use oil nor grease in good ceramic bearings.
But when the ceramic bearings are made with chromoly rings instead of stainless steel (chromoly is most common because its cheaper to make), then you need to oil it a little because the damages into the chromoly just because of using it will start to rust as soon moisture will reach it.
Washing your bearings with petrol, citrus solvent or water will bring moisture in the chromoly steel witch will rust (flyrust as we call it here).
SO my advice would be to wash the bearings out and give it one or two drops of good quality teflon oil. This will work perfectly.
Again grease (or creme) will work also but will slower your bearings. Its up to you.
