Clear coat on bars cracked

I clear coated my bars myself the other day. Now, right where the steerer tube touches the ground when I lay the scooter down, a largish chunk has cracked and fallen off, around an inch in diameter. I think I put it on a bit thick. Is this my fault, or should I get some higher quality clear coat?

If you held the can of clearcoat closer than 10-12 inches away, it's your own fault. I mean, clear coat is clear.. If it's thick enough to crack and come off, I would assume you used way too much or sprayed too close.

Clear coat is just really spray paint- it is not an armor coating :)

Could be just a normal chip out of the Clear coat from getting dinged by the ground or whatever the bars hit.

...but it does matter on how you apply the clear coat. If you still have the can go read the directions- there is usually a pretty good wait time between coats for it to cure properly.

"...light coats within an hour but if you wait over an hour then you have to wait 24-36 hrs before applying another coat"

something like that.

I applied a few coats spaced around 45-60 minutes a part. But I used a lot in some areas, definitely much closer than the 8-10 inches it says on the can. Darn. Not quite sure how to go about dealing with this.

tape it off and apply another coat in that spot then just let it go until you need to re-coat the whole thing and strip off the clear coat and start over.
