I shoot HD and have wanted to go to SD for a while, but I have the same problem. If your laptop has an expresscard slot, you can get a firewire to expresscard adaptor. My laptop doesn't have a firewire port nor an expresscard slot, so I'm fucked. I'm pretty sure that is the only two ways.

If you are a decent stick or MIG welder that will work just fine. Most companies just use TIG because it is much cleaner looking.

Lol there are like five responses above you telling you what to do. Anyway, 1.5 inches is a little shady. You are gonna want to either do more, or cut your bars shorter and weld them a little higher up. Your slit would end right where the weld is if only do 1.5 inches, and that's bad.
