If the stem fits snug over the fork then it's useless, sorry man. You could get tubing that fits it and weld a sleeve over it (a taper) to make it fit over the fork but that really wouldn't be worth doing.

If he likes 14/15 wide, he should keep it. He shouldn't change just because you tell him to. That was pretty sick man, I say stick with small bars. I love small bars but I like bigger ones for flowing more.

.058 is used so they are easier to get on, at least that's what I know some people were doing. I had bars that had a .058 wall thickness and they lasted me a year, worked perfectly.
