bearing mantainence

some of you kids are retarted. Wd-40 fucks them so much. But once again, just use the instructions that come with them and your good.

Alright, first off wd-40 is water based so it is obviously bad for them. secondly wd-40 contains surfactents, which will eventually damage the surface of the steel and cause oil to not stick properly to protect the bearing. The surfactents also trap dirt and dust that eventually will get stuck in the bearing itself and slow them down like hell. Wd-40 offers nothing in helping cleaning your bearings. If you wanna keep using it go ahead, i'm just saying that there are hundreds of better things to use like tri-flow or 3-1 that don't anally fuck your bearings. The best way though is to clean them with a citrus based solvent, dry them out, and then speed cream them.

First of all wd-40 is NOT water based, infact it contains no water at all.

Straight off the wd-40 website

"What does WD-40 contain?
While the ingredients in WD-40 are secret, we can tell you what WD-40 does NOT contain. WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or any known cancer-causing agents."

Second, Surfacants lower the surface tension of 2 mediums when its applied, releasing the hold of the dirt from the metal. The surfactants break up the dirt particals and keep them suspended in solvant.

Once your done releasing the dirt from the metal, you rinse the wd-40/surfactants/dirt with water. Water also contains surfactants which release the hold of the solvent to the metal, thus getting rid of the solvent, that broke down, released, and is suspending the dirt from the surface of the bearing.

Then you dry the bearings using the hair dryer which evaporates the water from the bearing. The bearing now contains no more surfactants, so oil WILL stick like its supposed to, keeping your bearings spinning fast and lasting long.

As you can now see, wd-40 does NOT harm your bearings if used to clean/degrease with as long as you wash the wd-40 out when your done removing the dirt then dry your bearings quickly to avoid rust. However, if used as a lubricant, wd-40 will keep the dirt traped in your bearings and also atract more dirt, which will ruin them.

okay my firend sprays his with wd 4o and it ruined them.

just sayin'.

and i don't want a new thread so should i get reds http://www.zumiez.com/zshop/Product...yBrand=False&OrganizationID=-1&ProductID=3028 or bones http://www.zumiez.com/zshop/Product...yBrand=False&OrganizationID=-1&ProductID=3167

i recommend not getting black panthers because i had some in my scooter only for about 2 months and already i have broken 3 somehow and they won't spin and they go all clikcy and stuff. idk
but for $30 they are not worth it. they were smooth at first though

Your friend is probly trying to use it as a lube. It will make your bearings go faster for a short while, but after a couple days they will be as slow if not slower then before he sprayed them. So he sprays them again, same effect, and keeps repeating till his bearings are shot. That is probly what happened, Ive had my same bearings for almost 1 and a half years using my method of cleaning and they are still as good as the day I got them.

Bones swiss are faster, get those if you can afford it. They come with 8 so they should last you a while.

Bones reds are just fine if you dont have the money for swiss.

I've had my reds for 3 years and they're faster than my friends bones super 6 swiss by far. You've had luck cleaning bearings your way and i've had good luck cleaning bearings my way. Clean them however you want.

I got myself banned.
Energy Turtle knows the deal. Personally, i dont touch WD-40 anymore, but have before for cleaning and had no problems. I just soak my bearings in alcohol now, dry them, than soak them in 3 in 1. I haven't cleaned any bearings in awhile, still riding the same ones.

When did I say I had bones super 6 swiss? When did I say I had bones at all? I got speed demons dude. Also bearings arent the only thing that makes you go fast. Wheels are everything. You could have stock bearings and green machines and still go faster then someone with bones swiss and stock wheels.

But whatever, to each his own. Im not here to argue, just to inform/be informed.

ok thanks guys

is there a durability difference noticeable at all though between reds and super swiss??
i don't want to keep on breaking mine.

and so for headsets you should use 3 in 1 too?

because my friends use WD4O for that too lol but i am not doing that anymore.
so you could just soak your bearings in the headsets in like 3 in 1 and dry off the excess stuff?
and should you do that if you have a fsa pig?

I'm not arguing either, i'm just saying that because i take care of my bearings, they are really fast. We both have the same setup too.
