This is a bike a guy rides at our local downhill park. One of the craziest bikes I've seen. Has a modded Yamaha fork. Karpiel Apocalypse. Same model bike Josh Bender rode off the Jaw Drop.
josh bender lives a couple hours from me, the bike scene is HUGE in canada

SPDs look to be the cheapest, but it seems like egg beaters are more used for cross. I think they're easier to get into as well? I don't know if that's true, it just seems like you can clip in from four different places on the pedal and I don't want to waste time mounting.

You cn clip into it in 4 differant places but that doesnt make it any easier than other pedals

New rear shock and fork.
Next upgrades will be an inner guard so it stays in the big ring, making it a single speed up front, new derailleur hanger, maybe tires/wider bars eventually.

I just placed second in this alleycat last night, the dude in first only beat me because he got a tattoo so he didn't have to do all the other stops. I won a handbuilt Suicide King frame (a local guy) so now I'm going to build a super legit track only rig. So somewhere in the next few years it'll be coming along. I'll get pictures of it up later but it's a steel frame, lugged on the seat tube/tt junction, brazed for the rest of it.

I won't stop wanting a touring bike with chrome/polished parts and a pastel colored frameset.
