so i want a new chainwheel. i always thought it was just trendy, but i rode my friends bike the other day and i liked it so much better. i ride around the city a lot and i think a smaller chainwheel would definitely make it a lot easier.

so any tips on what to buy? i was thinking 25t or 28t, but i'm not really sure, and i have no clue what kind to buy either?

and they hard to put a new one on? i've never done it.

also, i'm assuming i'll have to take links out of my chain, right?

If you have bigger gearing now, then yes you wil have to take out links from your chain. You will also have to get a 1-pc driver if you have a cassette hub, or a new hub/back wheel if you have a freewheel. I don't know if you know about gear ratios/rollouts, but I want to guess your on a 44/16 now, or maybe a 36-13, which are about the same. 25/9 is a little easier of a gear than 28/10, which means it will be easier to take one crank on 25/9 than 28/10, but the difference is not much at all, barely noticeable to most people. I'm sorry if I'm making you feel like an idiot, because I have no clue what you know. Chain wheels are pretty easy to switch too, but if you don't want to risk it I'm sure you could just go to a local bike shop. Hopefully I helped.

i would just get a eastern one. there like 20 bucks. but a 28 would work ok if you have a 13t driver. i have a 25 13 and it sucks but its not toooo bad. but a 25 9 would be nice

i pretty much get what you're saying. plus you're from NEPA so that's even better. i'm thinking 25/9 sounds good, so that means i'm going to need a new chainwheel and a new freewheel, right?

any chance can you link me to some good ones?

josh all the gear ratios you posted will feel exactly the same. if you want it harder to pedal you would want something like 28/11 or easier would be 28/9, but 28/10 and 25/9 will feel pretty much the same as what you have now.

Yeah, pretty much if you have the same gear ratio it's not gonna matter if you have bigger or smaller gears. Smaller gears might technically be faster since there's less mass but it's really not enough to notice. It could be that your friend has a lower gear ratio, but I dunno. Forgive me if that's been said before.
