even though i own a nikon im not bias toward them. nikon owns canon when it comes to quality and features in consumer level cameras, whereas canon dominates the playing field when it comes to high end cameras ( >$2000 level ).

lol dude, if this is your first slr, dont go buying loads of shit for it straight away like fisheyes and flashes cos you gotta know if you like the camera and photography first.
If your lookinmh for a cam less than $400 then you could get a fuji finepix 9000 something or a panasonic fz28, arent slr but prosumer/bridge cameras half way there

totally disagree. i don't see why you don't just spend 100 more for a camera of the same size, that you actually have the ability to expand upon in the future. when you get good with a p&s you're going to want an slr eventually, so its just a waste to get one now.

Yeah but hes saying, whats the point in buying a camera for $400 when its not a slr and then have to fork out another $500 for a slr because his old cams not up to standards. He may aswell by a decent slr now and get used to it than to spend loads more money.

correct. save up to get a good camera rather than waste 400 now.

you both dont understand,
Im not saying dont get an slr cos he isnt good enough.
Im saying he wont be able to get an slr for $400/Ã?Æ?ââ?¬Å¡Ã?â??Ã?£200 so a bridge camera would be in that range, whereas an SLR wont.

Well I'm getting a d40, i'm set on it. I will have 300 in 2 weeks, and my mom is paying like 200 of it so i might be able to get a d40 with a decent lens kit included.
