Use an angle grinder with a fresh cutting blade. These are cheap and very effective. It's very possible to achieve a good cut with an angle grinder if you have the patience.
Again, I've never personally used one of those tables on a drill press. I think itd be alright for slots though... If you raise the table up to the bit instead of lowering the bit then the bearings should be fine. Were talking about a 1.5-2" slot that is only about 1/8" wide. Its nothing heavy duty.
Using a Mill would make a much cleaner slot with a whole lot less burrs than an angle grinder. Plus angle grinder sounds sketch to me.
You can also take a small cutting blade (like on an angle grinder) and mount it to a drill press and clamp some stops to the table. Get it all in position so you can easily just slide a tube in and have it cut the slot.
There are literally hundreds of ways to do everything haha.
