District clamp

Okay so I have an old district clamp that I want to get usable again, as it is stripped. I get that I'll have to drill out the threads and run a bolt and nut through it, but how to I do that if the district clamp is curved where the nut would tighten? I tried and it just doesn't tighten properly, as the pressure is very unevenly distributed. How do I flatten out the part where the nut sits?

Grind it down with files or grinder?

My dad just said he'll take it to one of his buddies that has a machine shop and he'll fix the thing up
