depending on his area, i don't think he'll find a good subaru for 3k. people generally drive them into the ground. unless it's an olddd one. you're spot-on, though, subarus last a really long time. although some people say they're expensive to fix. i don't know much about them other than the fact that kids bust over WRXs and STis. that's kind of it.

like i said, honda. civics, accords, civic hatches. toyota corollas or even newer camrys, avoid the older ones. ford focuses, fusions, etc. avoid escorts. my aunts has a fuckload of problems.
god lol my brother had a 95 escort that when it did run, ran like ----- and more often then not didnt run lol. but subarus arent to expensive to fix, not as much as a vw or a volvo. and i guess there are a shit load up here in the northwest cause of le hippies but yea it really does depend on your area, luckily mine was well maintained and only needs a few minor things.
devin, im actually in the process of moving to rowlett right now and i can tell you after looking for hours and hours on the dallas craigslist that there is a shit ton of 95-01 mustangs that can be found around 2-3k.

late 90's Accords or early 2000's Civics run forever. Toyota Corrollas, Avalon (kind of an old man car but our has 280k miles when we sold it and still went strong), or late 90's Camry. Those all run forever. Pretty much anything Japanese.
Also, gas mileage will be much better with a 4 cylinder. I drive an 06 Toyota Tacoma and I get 28 mpg. Great for a small truck. I don't know if you are okay with trucks, I need it.

yeah, hers is in the shop more than it's driveable. but the mechanic is whipped for her and works on her car for free so she has no reason to get something new.

acura TLs can be found pretty cheap, along with TSXs. RSXs are generally a bit more since they're trending but not too much. i'm sure you could find one of them for under 3k.

if you were to go with a mustang, don't get anything after 98. 99-05 mustangs have HORRIBLE handling, especially in the rain.

next time you come down to newport man there is a place my family including myself have bought like 8 cars from over the years. they get cars that have been in wrecks and fix em up with pasts from other cars. they end up turning out really nice that way but are really cheap.

prettymuch all in the 3-4k price range. right around 100k miles (which is good for a civic, accord, etc.) and just reallly good starter cars all around. They're called Cheap and Charming autos, run by two honest dudes that just like fixing wrecked cars up and flipping em. i've had two civics so far from them, super cheap when/if they need to be fixed. i think in 6-7 years that i've had their cars i've needed to go to the shop like twice.

thats my suggestion, this place is really good (i'd vouch for it all the time at least).

I would do it. KBB says it's worth $2800 so I'd offer that and see if you can talk them down at all. Also, don't make any offers until you see it in person. What's the link for the coupe?

Make sure anything you buy has decent brakes, no pull in the steering, and decent A/C. That stuff lets you know it was taken care of.

So many people are all over the place in this thread, jeez. Let's start with the basics.

-Everyone is willing to negotiate, even if they say they aren't. Cash talks.

-Don't buy an SUV if you're looking for efficiency. Period.

-Don't look for something cool, modified, fast, etc at that price point, unless you have mechanical ability and don't mind fixing things yourself when they come up. Because trust me, things WILL come up.

-You aren't going to get anything past some early 2000s models for 3k or under, so anyone saying RSX, TSX, Acuras like that, Ford Fusions, etc is just dreaming.

-Don't buy a Mustang for 3 grand unless it's a fox body ('84-'93) because any newer Mustang for that price will be either a high-mileage shitbox or an automatic v6. If you buy an automatic v6 Mustang, kill yourself.

-Subarus are not expensive, but AWD can be if it has issues. You can buy just about any mid-late 90s one around here for under 3k. Especially Legacies, those go for like a grand to 1500 all day.

-Civics are some of the most upsold cars in the used car business just because they're known to be reliable and good on gas. That's all well and good, but paying 3 grand for a car that is really worth 1500 bucks at most isn't ideal. Like that one you posted for 2800 bucks, I wouldn't give him 2 grand for it. Plus you know it was owned and thrashed by some Fast and Furious-inspired kid because of the taillights. Basically, Civics are solid cars but there are way better options for the price you'll pay for one.

-Don't give in to all the idiotic brand bias in here. That kind of stuff may have been true when the cars first came out, but 10-20 years later, it means nothing. For the cars to have been around that long, the issues would have been sorted out, and by now it's just a free for all. Any car from any brand could be the best car you ever own, or a complete nightmare.

-Test drive the car, and beat the living fuck out of it. Check everything you possibly can beforehand, or have somebody that knows what they're doing do it for you. People suck, and they WILL try to rip you off if given the chance. That 3000 dollar Civic that looks like the perfect car could have a trans on the verge of grenading, or terminal unibody damage underneath. You never know. Drive it hard on the test drive. TRY to break it. If it doesn't break and it still runs smooth afterwards, you have a winner.

-Don't spend ALL of your money on the car. Instead of buying a perfect car for 3000 only to have something break later, buy a nice 2000 dollar car and have a grand left for when something does break.

Anyways, here is my list of cars I'd start looking at: Subaru Legacy (up to '99), Ford Focus (any in your price range), any mid-90s Buicks, VW Jetta or Golf ('93-'98, any with the 2.0 engine), 4th gen Nissan Maximas, and pretty much any Saturn. There's way more though, just gotta be on the lookout.

he wants something reliable. my friend has a 1998 jetta and its a piece of shit. he drives like an old lady and that car has a new problem every day. just last night the key hole literally came out of the door. then he couldnt unlock anything because of electrical problems.

just find a good accord. im consistently going 100+ with mine on backroads and beating the fuck out of it for a year, and all it needs is some new oil and an oxygen sensor. and a brake light. everything is still in good shape.

i was gonna say something about that, but i figured i'd let it go..

he clearly said reliable like five times, VW is NOT reliable. just because you like them doesn't mean they're reliable. didn't your last one die? and yeah VWs always have electrical problems.

what I'm really looking hard at. Seems about perfect for me. I also found a 98 Civic coupe but I feel like I need the convenience of a sedan.

A coupe is only an inconvenience to the people you're driving, otherwise, continue using your trunk to quickly store things (being able to quickly get them out) and continue not caring. Coupe's are gas savers and help the car turn tighter (smaller cars make tighter turns.) They also look better, I really don't think that's even an opinion.

I've got three Toyotas in the family, a Tundra, Sienna, and a Corolla and they're all awesome. I'd recommend a Toyota if you can get a good one pretty cheap.

My first car was a 1997 Jetta 2.0 5spd with 221,000 miles on it. Ran perfectly every day in any weather, never gave me a single issue. My friend even had a mk2 Jetta with over 400,000 miles on the stock motor. If you find a decent one, they are perfectly reliable. And they're dirt cheap, and so are the parts for them.

Everyone i know with a vw aside you hates it with a passion, always have electrical problems and cant wait to get rid of it. Dont take your chances.

And him being "handy" with cars is why his lasts him sometimes. His current vw has problems on the monthly.

The abs on my aunts jetta stopped working one day and her brakes locked up at 60. Just a testament to mexican made german electronics. Just get a honda owned by an older person.
