if i were to use a rubber mallet to hammer the headset cups into my deck would it damage them in any way, and would you advise any certain ways of hammering it in?

Thats the way.
Thats how they did it in bike stores back in the day, iv'e done it to every headset iv'e ever had to install.

if you have a wooden bench put ur headset in the tube a little bit then go caveman on the bench lol
