You can't. It is something that you are born with and it doesn't usually show any signs until your mid to late teens and by your late teens early twenties it becomes a full blown "disorder" if that is what you were destined to have. A lot of times it can be triggered by a stressful situation or trauma so he isn't totally B.S. about the fall. The stress from the fall, the injuries and the medical bills and what not could have easily triggered it but it was something that was going to happen sooner or later anyways whether he fell or not. Plus he is in the exact age group where the "change" is most prevalent.
Also, you can't "have" bipolar, you ARE bipolar.
There quite a few other diorders like this that really don't show up until you late teens and early twenties so it makes sense it is happening to him now and probably explains a lot about his PRIOR behavior.
Other then that I really don't know what to say about the situation. I have had my ups and downs with KC but I just wish him luck with whatever he decides to do.
