Welding makes the base metal weaker.
Horribly weaker when it's aluminum.

and also it isn't because of the strip at the bottom, that affects next to nothing, it's because the deck walls are thinner

Fuck your dumb JDBen. Cut out a plate that fits the bottom of the deck perfectly, Put a few small welds along the sides.
