1. wax it.
2. practice going very slow, and just landing square on top of it.
3. once you're used to the feeling, try going a little faster, landing the same way, and actually sliding.
4. make sure that your deck is almost completely sideways, or else you'll fall over the other side.
5. LEAN FORWARD!

square is definetly easier what nick said and if you have a zero ril make one of the legs sideways so u have more room then when you get better put it normaly

come in slow at a mellow angle to start, then work your way up. putting it down a curb or ledge could help practice with handrails when you get better.

is it now?

but no seriously it doesnt really matter much at all you just need to remember to have your feet directly about the rail with of course the deck inbetween ;)

Always get your feet OVER the rail.
Never to the side of the rail, it'll throw your balance badly.
Round rails are way easier.. look at the physical side of things before making a judgement..
If you get on a square rail at an angle..much easier to fall?
Any angle you get on a round rail, its all the same...

try ledges first thats what i did just dont lean back that will make you fall trust me the first time i went for a flat rail i didnt lean forward and i was out with a tailbone injury for a few weeks it was gay just stay confident

just start slow and dont do that much of the rail then wok your way up to going faster and the whole thing.Rails are very hit or miss for me somedays i'm one and can due my hole rail and others i can barely grind at all
Aaron-althouh i somewhat agree with your "physical" judgement of rails once you get the hang of landing on top of a square rail it is much easier than a round rail. Round rails are well round so for me atleast i slip off a little easier. Maybe it is just what we are used to but for me square rails are much easier.

Go really slow at first and just clip it.
Then go faster and faster and jump earlier and earlier onto the rail.
And most importently LEAN FOWARD.
