I personally love the D40. Excellent Quality, fisheye compatible, great manual/macro settings. I love it I say go for it. I have one now and I love it.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Well if your going to buy one now, the d70 is a better choice.
The d40 may be compatible with a fisheye but it won't autofocus it since the d40 doesn't support all functions (autofocus!) of AF lenses, only af-s. The d70 will.
D70 will shoot 3fps and the d40 can only shoot 2.5fps
Same size censor (6.1 MP)
Aside from the autofocus motor, the d40 does have a larger lcd so its up to you.

If you have any more questions I could help you out.
Since these are both about the same price these days I'd rock the d70.

I think hes saying even though a d40 is compatible it, it doesn't fully utilize the lens. D70 will.

exactly.

i wouldn't take really take that into consideration, though. with the nikkor 10.5 fisheye on a d40, you can set the focus to infinite and anything past about 2 feet will be in focus, it's crazy. the only time you'll need to focus with a fisheye is if you're doing macro stuff, and then manual focusing is better anyway.

not quite, the depth of field is deeper than 2 feet. but still your relatively safe.
