pretty much no paint dries completely in 5 minutes. its always best to wait at least an hour after painting before handling the painted product

This happend to me, I rawed my bars then I Lost all mey money for almost a week. Just sand them down REALLY good all over. Don't let them get wet at all. Wipe them down with a towel then clear coat them. I would strait up use the whole can. If there is on tiny spot that get uncoated you'll have rust under you clear coat then you eventually have no bars.

Before clear coating them make sure they are super clean. Use acetone to make sure no grease or dirt is left then apply 3-4 thin coats of clear lacquer with approx 5 mins between coats. Leave over night to cure and they should last a long time :)

As Mr. H mentioned iffin' you really want to do a good job you have make sure ALL oil and dust residue is wiped off the bars before you apply the clear coat.

Oil from your hands/fingers is usually the culprit that people forget about- even CLEAN hands have natural body oils so don't touch the bars after wiping them down.

FOLLOW the directions on the Can- most clear coats have a different dry time and re-coat time than regular rattle cans.

One can I have is a 72 hr wait time after 1 hour so after you apply a couple light coats within the 1st hr you would have to wait 72 hrs before you would apply the Clear coat again.

Steal your Mom's or Sister's fingernail polish remover for a quick wipe down :)

Thanks guys, helped alot!
Got the downtube sanded down really good, doing the rest now and clear coating.

Clear coat them once a month too. 4130 is an alloyed steel and will rust when oxygen touches it (oxidization), this is often why bars come standard powdercoated because it puts on a thick hard to break coat protecting them from rust. The clear coat of spray paint will wear off and scratch in places (after all, it is only spray paint, not industrial style powdercoating) so just tape up your grips and spray those bars monthly, don't lettem go longer than that or it'll be work later due to sanding off rust, etc.

I would use wax oyl which is what the use for old rusted cars that need some rust touch up. what you do is you whip it down to clean it. than you have to dabb it down and leave blotches all over. you let it dry because the wax oyl is comprised of mineral spirits and the wax. let dry as long as you can at least a day in a dry place. then gentley wipe of the blotches. with a cloth. you will only have to repeat this every year.
