sizing buff bars

this has probably been asked before but when getting the size for buff bars do i take my bar out and measure from the middle of the crossbar all the way to the bottom or do i leave it in and measure from the middle of the crossbar to where the bar meets the headset. cuz if i measured to where it meets the headset it would be a few inches shorter once i put it in
