SKA !!!

it's not complete sh!t that i know ASOB & BTMI!. they're basically the same band, and they're both local around here, seeing as they're from Baldwin here on Long Island. I'm pretty close with Mike Costas (drummer from both), Dave Solomon(big fat trombone player), John the bassist, and i'm aqquaintances with Jeff Rosenstock. I don't see many of the other members anymore, they're never around at shows so i've lost contact with them.

and Catch 22 f*cking sucks now. regardless if they still play the old music, they're not the same band, and their musical direction has been straying away from ska ever since the release of dinosaur sounds. listen to f*cking Keasbey Nights, Alone In A Crowd or Washed Up & Through The Ringer! and then listen to Dinosaur Sounds & Permanent Revolution. Big f*cking change. Even the change from Dinosaur Sounds to Permanent Revolution is big.

and i know LTJ is switching labels and re-releasing Pezcore! and that 7" vinyl they put out a long time ago. but they don't play that much old stuff live anymore, and their horn players just f*cking stand around like idiots. And the only reason they're re-releasing their old sh!t is because In With The Out Crowd got such a terrible response from all their fans.

i know you weren't challenging me on the clash and madness, but i tend to curse & stuff when i get pissed.

and i've been listening to ska for about 8 or 9 years, not 4. and it does matter that you don't go to shows, because you aren't up to date with which bands are doing what and what they're ACTUALLY playing live.

edit: and i f*cking know ska doesn't have to have horns in it.. I'm not retarded.

okay.

permanent revolution IS FUCKING SKA. I OWN THE FUCKING ALBUM. thanks.

i have faith in the new album.

he has had some wrong facts.

yep i go to freestone at least twice a week, and i live an hour from it by car. but i skate, not scooter. its my second home.

its sick how you know jeff. both are amazing bands.

i do enjoy some of the new C22 stuff now and then. it is ska, dont even say it isnt.

we all curse when we get pissed, no problem

i lurk youtube like hell, i know what there doing (i have to get good grades to get rides to shows [cant drive, nor can a lot of my friends] and that doesnt work for me)

permanent revolution isn't ska. i have it too, and i hate it.

Hopefully LTJ reverts back to the stuff they're best known for. I've been a fan of them forever, and I was pissed with what they did on IWTOC.

Yeah, Jeff's an awesome guy. he's a funny guy, and he's really chill.

and back to catch 22's newer stuff, i loved dinosaur sounds, but alas, i f*cking gave up on catch with permanent revolution. it disappointed me.

a point i failed to make earlier: just because a band has a FEW ska songs doesn't mean they're a ska band, even if they used to be one. bands change the music they play all the time.

and if you can tell me what's structurally different about the composition of Ska and Reggae, i'll drop this whole stupid thing and apologize.

can you not hear the ska in that?

pezcore is what introduced me to ska. i wasnt copletely dissapointed with IWTOC, though. a still life franchise is a decent song.

dinosaur sounds was fucking awesome. good times is one of my all time favorite songs.

i dont know about you, but i consider a band to be a ska band if they still play ska shows.

and im basicly pulling this out of my ass, but the difference between ska and reggae is the sound of the guitar/keys. ska is fatser while reggae is slower. (the only reggae i ever listen to is the aggrolites)

I know there's elements of ska on Permanent Revolution, but as a whole it's not a ska album.

Pezcore is a pretty good album. I like Losing Streak & Hello, Rockview the best out of all of LTJ's albums tho.

Dinosaur Sounds is great... except Good Times haha. That's my least favorite song on that album. (Btw, if you ever heard the Live Catch 22 album, I was at that show. It was pretty sweet.)

I determine a band's genre by what they're newest material is like, and the direction they're taking the music in.

and no, that's not really the difference. i kinda figured you were gonna say one was faster and the other is slower. it sounds that way, but in reality it isn't. they're both set at basically the same tempo. the reason Ska sounds faster is because the guitar/keys are played on every offbeat in a measure (1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and), as opposed to reggae's guitar/keys being played on the 2nd and 4th beats of a measure (1 2 3 4).

and the aggrolites are f*cking gnarly. me and my friend drove 3 hours to see them in Connecticut like 2 & 1/2 years ago. It was SO worth it.

My favorite songs from Dinosaur Sounds are "Rocky", "Motown Cinderella", "Chin Up" and "Regression". and of course "Wine Stained Lips".

I haven't listened to Dinosaur Sounds in forever tho. when i listen to Catch, i usually listen to either their 'Rules Of The Game' demo, 'Keasbey Nights', or 'Alone In A Crowd'.

Which songs do you like off Hello, Rockview? and why don't you like the album as a whole?
Personally, I think it's LTJ's best material.

Searchbar, you've just showed your a complete noob to SR by challenging Hep Greg in the Music section. That could possibly be the dumbest thing you could do here. Once you've been around for awhile you'll realize thats just a really, really bad idea. The Music section belongs to Greg and Margaret, and nobody else.

rant over.

Austin, why are you getting in to this? stop sucking up to greg. Theyve already finished the argument so theres not much point in bringing it back up.

Because I'm a genuine asshole who brings stuff up that is already done with just to ruin everyones day.

And I'm not sucking up to anyone, just stating simple facts. No more, no less.

Thats entire argument was great. I dont know why anyone would argue with greg about ska.
we just see things differently, thats all

for example, i think bands are considered ska if they still play ska shows, he doesnt

no ones really wrong or right, its just a matter of opinions

haha that's a tough question.

probably:

Big D & The Kids Table
Streetlight Manifesto
Arrogant Sons Of Bitches
Bomb The Music Industry!
Pannonian Ska Allstars Orchestra
Planet Smashers
Desmond Dekker
The Skatalites
The Slackers

i pretty much just love the genre as a whole. those are the only bands i can seriously separate from the rest as being my favorites. but i basically love every ska band i've ever heard.
