Skateboard on a plane?

Hey guys, I'm going on a holiday (domestically, not going international) and I was wondering if you or anyone you know has ever taken a skateboard onto a plane?

I'm limited to carry on baggage only, and even disassembling it the skateboard won't fit in a bag. I don't want them to take it off me so I'm kind of scared.

Rang the airline and they told me that a skateboard is 'sporting equipment' so it must be checked in as baggage and paid for :(

She told me I can't just carry it on, and I asked her why not. Her answer was along the lines of 'Sporting equipment is often awkward and too big for carrying on the plane, that's why you have to check it in as baggage'. Well, that's fucked that idea. Fuck Airplanes.

i was on a plane today. there was a kid on the flight who had a board, and jon reyes put his scoot in the overhead bins. so yeah, as long as it fits in the overhead you can take it on the plane.
