Somewhat major problem...

Allright so i thought i had the starnut for my SR fork in far enough, and i tightened it ALOT so my headset wouldn't be loose... now i learned it wasn't in far enough and the bolt is on the starnut past the threads. My front end is stuck togeather and my headset is loose as shit. I tried a few things to get the threads to catch the nut threads but they didn't work. I stuck it on a vice and pulled up on the bars and spun it and it didn't work, and i tried moving the bolt a different angles to see if the threads would catch but no luck. My headset is so loose now its pretty much unrideable. Tomorrow, if no one has any good suggestions, im gonna saw the fork off so the bolt cuts and just ride a stock fork. I would saw my bars but there rads. Any suggestions? I want to find a way to get the head of the bolt off but i don't think thats happening.

same thing happened to me it sucks hella. i decided i would break my compression system instead of ruining my fork tho. i ride stock fork and headset now cuz the SR one had problems

How did you break the compressions system? If i can get that apart and still have the fork in one piece that would be bomb

try cutting the head of the bolt off and loosen the clamp and the bars will come off

haha damn, i was thinking about buying an SR fork but all i hear are problems, i think ill stay away from them for now.

im probably getting this problem wrong but...

what if you:

1) take out the bolt completely
2) loosen the clamp take the rads off and whatnot...
3) then put the starnut in farther.

And i re-read what you said...put the rads in a vice....then id take some like needle nose plyers or something.. pull like a bitch on the bolt... and start turning it.. maybe that could at least get it back onto the threads so you can do the magical steps above haha.

My friend's dad took a drill, and drilled at the head of the bolt and it popped off, it worked like a charm.

Use a drill bit that is larger than the head of the bolt.

1) Loosen your clamp.
2) Put your bars in a vice.
3) Pull on your forks as hard as you can WHILE unscrewing the bolt.
4) If the threads still won't catch in the star nut then KEEP pulling on the forks to keep the play out and take a hammer and hit the top of the forks downward (like you are trying to take them out). All the pressure will directly sent to the compression system and the bolt threads will bite in the star nut.
5) Keep pulling and back out the bolt.
6) Repeat as many times as necessary until the threads catch... and they will eventually.

NOTE: It is very important to keep pressure on the bolt the entire time while trying to get the threads to catch so make sure you are pulling or pulling and hammering the whole time you are trying to back the bolt out or the threads will keep slipping. It should not be necessary to cut the forks or the bolt and you might even be able to reuse the star nut if it's not totally destroyed afterwards.

ANOTHER NOTE TO EVERYONE: You should NEVER tighten your compression system "A LOT". Making it snug is more than enough. If you can't tighten it anymore and it starts getting hard to turn and your headset is still loose DO NOT FORCE IT! That means you need to take your bars off and set the star nut a little deeper. If the star nut is at the right depth you should not have to tighten it more than about a quarter of an inch.

Ok well i tried what Andrew said and it wasn't working. So i got my Dad and he just started smacking the top of the fork with a hammer and the starnut started comming down and eventually came out. I thought the bolt was on the part without the threads but it was at the very top of the threads and wouldn't loosen up, the piece of the starnut with the threads busted out from the hammering i guess and i got that piece off the bolt and just need to get a new starnut. Good thing i didn't resort to drilling/dremel
