yeah, you can mask it with woodglue i think.

If you start with the brightest colour (with the most white in it) and end with the darkest colour (with the most black in it) it should work.

actually im experementing with that try to boil your wheels til they are kinda soft and then drop food coloring on it in patches and stuff . im going to do it to my protos
