Todd Scheffer - Sponsorship Advice

Okay, well this is a message taken from Zero Gravity NW's website, written by their owner. I didn't write this, but thought it would be helpful for people trying to get a sponno to get them on the right path. Enjoy!

This is a post on ways to help riders to get that sponsorship they so desire.
More often than not, I get emails from scooter riders saying “I was just curious if you are sponsoring and if so will you sponsor me. If you are interested email me back and I will send a video” That’s it! No name, no info on where they live, their age, nothing that tells of who they are. I also get emails that say “SPONSOR ME” with a video link. NOPE! Delete! That’s usually my response to those.

Think about it, you are basically asking a company to hire you. When doing so you need to give them a reason to what to do so. You wouldn’t send an email for a job opening at Boeing saying “Hire me” and link a video of you working with tools would you? No, you send them a resume with a bunch of info about you. Your working history, how much experience you have, and your goals for the company, how the company would benefit by having you as a representative for them and so on….

The same goes for when sending a sponsorship request. Send a resume, if you don’t know what one is, Google it! Put some effort into it. Make it stand out so it’s remembered over the 100’s of others that came in that week. Research the company you are looking to get sponsored by. See what type of riders they currently have. Find out if they have a character standard for their riders. If they do, don’t send a video with a song that has bunch swearing or foul behavior in it. Most likely that’s not the type of rider they are looking for.

For example, Zero Gravity is a Christian based team. So many times I get emails from rider saying how they love what we are all about and how they go church and all that stuff. But their Facebook or Myspace pages say otherwise. Don’t say one thing and live the other! I would rather someone say “You know I am not sure about the church side of Zero Gravity, but I am sure about the parts and know the company would benefit by having me as a rider. So I would really like a shot at being on the team” We companies want to know that the potential riders have done their homework and that they are really for the company and not just the parts. We want to know that a potential rider is going to rep the company in a manner that is beneficial to us.

Give them some information about yourself. And always send a recent video of yourself, a video that has some variety in it. Make a video that has all of the tricks you can do. Don’t send a video that has you doing the same trick over and over. Put some time into your resume and video. Make it good and worth our time to watch! We scooter companies are very busy and if it doesn’t catch our attention, they usually go into our trash can!

how about let companies come to you? if you do that then you know you are ready to be sponsored and the company is excited to have you on the team because they came to you. Ride for yourself not so you can get on inside or so you can get sponsored. do the tricks you like doing not what other people like seeing, becausse in the end people are going to see your different style and love watching your videos because you stand out and have your own style instead of being like every aussie and trend everything like footjams and inwards. god do what makes you like your riding and makes you happy, not what makes anyone else like your riding, thats how it should be for everything, not just scootering.

It is way to hard for us to be on top of all the best riders and up and coming riders. Running a scooter business not easy and is a lot of work. I have owned many other companies and this is by far the most time consuming one I have run. Also as a company owner I want our riders to want to be on our team and believe in our product. Beside with that mind set of let them come to us will not get you far in life. Just try using that to find a job. Life dont work that way! Not hating just giving some wisdom.

If you deserve a sponsorship, it will come to you. Riders should rarely ever need to advertise for themselves to get a well earned sponsorship. If you're unknown then you are for a reason and companies don't want unknown riders because then you can't really advertise for them. When people think of Blunt they think of Ryan Upchurch or Brendon Smith or Max Peters, there's a reason for that. A good name goes a long way. Real legit riders are like that because the companies came to them, not the other way around.

Life dont always work that way. You dont always get what you deserve. I wish we did! Different companies do it different ways. We are about building and raising up good riders. Sure I could probably go throw enough money at many top riders and they would come ride for us. If I paid enough, I know I could get Tyler Bonner. I have known him since he was like 12 and he is a local. I could put him on the team and ZG would have instant popularity. But thats not what we are about. We want riders that are all about what the company of ZG is about. We are about building the sport for longevity and being a good influence to the next generation of riders. Its not just about fame and fortune to us, and we dont want riders of that mind set.(no I am am not saying Tyler is that way!) Thats just us man, and dont expect all other companies to do the same.

Actually he has a point. While maybe not totally true, there is merit there. To be worthwhile to a company you must be known. If you're out shredding and getting top 5's in the pro class, putting out edits and hitting more than just 1 local park, you will get noticed. Because you are getting exposure. It's not what totally gets you sponsored, but it DEFINITELY helps and so I'd say there's a little merit to what he said.

I got myself banned.

die, die , die.

Whats this non-sense about a sponsor always going to the good riders, alot of riders in this sport today are underated, and un noticed, most of the time its the only way, Just because you don't really have a name for you're self doesn't mean you don't deserves a sponsor, Havn't you actually noticed, you only really find new riders like videos etc when they get on a team or something similar?
