whats up with proto and their machining tolerences?

first of all i would just like to say that i am not trying to hate on andrew broussard or his products. proto is actually my favourite scooter company and i try to do my best to support them by purchasing their products whenever possible. however i am just a bit concerned about a few things and needed to vent.

a few months ago i ordered a scs and a threadless stricker fork. once i got them and and tried putting them on my scooter i realized that the inner diameter of the scs was too small to fit over the steerertube of my fork even using all my force and then hitting it with a mallet. i had to end up spreading the scs with coins to get it on. this wasnt a really big deal however i still found it to be a bit of an inconvienience since i change set ups often and it requirs a lot more work since it doesnt just slide on and off by hand like it should.

what really bothered me though and got me to make this thread was that i had ordered a pair of spoked proto grippers and when i received them today i cleaned and re lubed my trusty bones swiss bearing and then got out my bearing press. as i was setting it up i realized that it was completely unnecessary as the bearings required no force whatsoever to go into the wheel. once they were in the wheel they were really loose and had a lot of play so i could wiggle them back and forth and when i turned it over they just dropped right it. i have been usung these bearing for quite a while in all sorts of wheels with no problem so clearly they are not the issue and the inner diameter of where the bearing sits in the wheel is way to big. i tried putting them on my scooter anyways but there is no way i can ride it that way with the wheels jiggling around like crazy and making horrid noises whenever i set it down...

so i was wondering if anyone else has had similar problems with proto prducts and if maybe someone who works for proto could explain why the machining tolerances are so poor?

well that could certainly explain things but thats not really much of way to run a company that is at the forefront of representing our sport...

I think alex steadman said the bearing slots will be fixed in the second batch of wheels. But what does that mean for those who get the first ones? Possible warranty coverage?

you're a retard, he doesnt physically make the cores, he has them machined.... so regardless of if he was high or not, it wouldnt make a difference in the outcome of the wheel.

as for the maker of this thread, wrap a sticker around your bearing to make up for the space in between the bearing and the slot.

i have used that technique before with putting bearings in cheap plastic core wheels that became ovalized but it never really worked all that well and when i shell out 75$ for a pair of wheels i expect them to be perfect and not to have to do a bunch of ghetto mods to them just so that i can ride...

i think that he gets some of his sponsored riders to help out around the factory but like greg said that doesnt really have much to do with it since i assume that the machines are all cnc.

that would be nice aslong as i dont have to pay to ship them back because i cost me about the same price as the wheels themselves just to get them here in the first place.

im not saying you should be happy with the wheels, im just saying do that so you can actually ride. and if you use shirt tag material, it doesnt ovalize or come loose.

It's cause everyone was bitching so much about how tight the old ones were, how impossible they were to get in and out, whereas nobody on the team had any problems with them. He changed the size for you, the consumer, as nobody could use muscle or brain to put the bearings in. The place that machined the cores actually told Andrew that the bearings slots should be way bigger than they are now, but luckily he didn't make them that big. Next batch will be between this and the old size, so hopefully perfect. Until then just ride it, everyone on the team rides them fine, you've got no excuse not to.

Use painters tape, it doesn't bunch up like some of the other tapes. Also I would like to give props to alex and greg for their mature responses. Everyone on SR should give better responses like theirs and it might raise the level of intelligence of the people on this forum a bit.

yeah i really hate when people bitch about not being able to get their bearings in, its called a press for fucks safe. i have had some tight ass metalcores in the past but i can always get them in just fine with my press. oah well i took gregs advice and cut up an eastern sticker and wrapped it around the outside of my bearings. i works alright but it is a but more ghetto then i am used to. anyways thanks for letting me know whats up and allthough i dont think that i will be needing new wheels anytime soon i would still like to see him go back to having the smaller inner diameter in the future.

oah and feel free to lock this thread now if you like, question had been answered and i have my wheels on without play anymore...
