Your High School

I'm sure I will get ripped to shreds for saying this, but I actually like school. Unlike 80% of kids posting in this thread I genuinely enjoy learning.
i absolutely love learning, its the only thing in life that really matters. but public high school?? nahh fuck that dude, everything they taught was useless memorization bullshit, besides a few english courses. ive learned more in the last year of doing online school then i have in the 11 years of public school i did, if i find something interesting i will spend hours learning and researching about it on my own time, and if i find something that i think is a bit useless (98% of what they teach you in high school) i'll spend little time on it and get it over with rather than being forced to learn about it. if i need help there are people i can reach out to that care, rather than high school teachers.

i just think high school rips kids to shreds. its made for such a small group of people (and for them, its great). but for the other 90%, the social aspect kills self-esteem, the material they teach kills creativity (as well as the atmosphere and the method of teaching), the pressure, of course, is insane. the most stressed people ive ever met are people who are in high school (and for what, a test that wont even matter in 5 years), and in my opinion theres something seriously wrong there, adolescence is a time for development and experimentation, and high school puts a serious dent in that process. (LEARNING, just like you said, its really really really important and those 80% of kids that you say hate it so much would actually like it as much as you do if their learning was centered around things that matter to them/they care about)

cause thats what really matters in life.
Ben, I agree with you on a lot of things but for me, yeah it kinda does matter. It's what people in my family do. My dad's and engineer, my mom works at a hospital and my sisters becoming an engineer at Cornell right now. I really like biochemistry and want to work in this field and as much as it sucks, life is going to be a lot easier with advanced degrees and a high profile job.

Ben, I won't disagree with you because a lot what you said is very true. However, you can't blame the school system for kids being stressed out over tests. Most of that stress comes from kids putting pressure on themselves and their parents forcing them to attend a good college/university.

dude, i blame the school system 100%. the fact that its run on a one-way pace is what stresses most kids out. parents arent the only ones who force kids to go to college, every teacher and staff member says that that is the only way to be succesful in life, and to get there you have to do good on the tests that they hand to you in school. they tell you if you dont get good grades (to their opinion/curriculum/standards of course) then you're fucked and you'll end up being a cashier for the rest of their lives. and that scares the shit out of most kids.

gerrit, thats good for you. yeah my high school sucks but its not really just mine, those kids who dont like chemistry and get bad grades USUALLY aren't even dumb, they just have absolutely no way to express their talents because schools are run in a way so incredibly linear that it bores most kids to death. my chemistry class was the absolute least hands-on experience i've ever had and that totally turned me away from it. something like that needs to be done through, at least SOME experience, not a bunch of books, in my opinion. also, you cant really blame every kid for not being as smart as you because they don't like chemistry.

frank, you dont need to worry about what people in your family do, because as much as it will please them, you need to do what you love because in the end it is your life and you're a completely differen person than them. there are WAY too many kids that end up disliking their careers/lives because they listened to their parents rather than themselves. however if you truly love biochemistry then go for it (even though i have no idea what you plan to do with that degree)

Well I take that back. Intro chemistry is an absolute joke and I have never taken an easier class. AP chem is fun, and chemistry as a field is fun.

I have literally never heard a school official say that in my life. Maybe two teachers, but that shouldn't mean that every teacher thinks that way.

Schools don't only offer classroom courses. Most trades you want to do can be done where I live (might be different for Americans). I have plenty of friends in the electrician, eco-studies, personal fitness trainer programs and other specialist high skills major programs. Just because you are having a bad experience with the education system doesn't mean that plenty of others are.

How would you encourage students to express their creativity in classrooms? Specifically math and science classes.

Exactly, I've never met a person who genuinely didn't like learning about something. The word 'learning' unfortunately becomes synonymous with school for lots of people, especially early on, and if their school experience blows then that can completely turn them away from it. That's what I really hate about public school; if someone's interests and talents lie outside the classes/topics that are covered, then they're made to feel like they're not smart because of the grading system and comparing themselves to other people that are better at a certain topic. Lots of people get tricked like this, I've seen it happen.
