Just so that you get a wider angle of view, and so that if you post it on youtube or facebook, it can go fullscreen, or almost fullscreen, instead of just a thin strip in the middle.
Fisheye actually looks really good though, where'd you get it?

even if i turn the phone sideways the black edges are still there, the only way it goes away is if i switch to video. i tried moving the lense around but still the same. but thats ok it was worth 16 dollars anyways. I got it off ebay
