A thread I've wanted to make for a while.

This is NOT a 'I quit and need attention thread'. mmk. I just want to say my piece and pass on information and that's it. There is no point to this thread, maybe you'll find it interesting, but probably not. I know as soon as I post this there are going to be people that sit here and point holes in my arguments, laugh at me or just somehow turn it into an argument but whatever. Just hear me out.

This is shiit I have learnt over the course of riding scooters for years, so meh.

Well, pretty much I don't ride scooters and shiit anymore - I never 'quit' I've just stopped riding. It's just not the same and it just feels like I'm not getting anything out of it. Who knows maybe I'll pick it up again and have fun again? But that just doesn't look likely right now. I'll probs be selling some stuff in the "Sell your stuff" section (theres some good shiit too so I'd check it out soon).

I remeber a while back I think Sean Kane made a thread about riding and loosing friends due to it, and at the time I was pretty much like "nah that won't happen to me". It's taken me probably 3 years to realize it had. It sounds so stupid but my social life has suffered due to riding. I'd constantly be asked by people at school "Hey wana come with us on the weekend?" and I'd just say "no thanks I'm riding". I have now pretty much lost friendships due to that. You could say "well just hang with the people you have met from riding" well thats all well and good but they are all a year younger then me - and I'm not saying they are immature or not cool people because they are - I'm just saying I can't imagine them wanting me to hang with them on the weekend outside of riding haha.
What I'm trying to say is riding isn't your life. Keep your social life intact as well. I am NOT a social person, I fuckking hate having to sit at someones house, drink beer, watch TV and talk. It sucks alright. But I wish I had, I've missed so many opportunities because of it. This applys even if your 12 years old guys. It's honest adive and it will happen to you.

This is a little thing I typed up from a myspace comment after a dude commented me asking my oppinion on scooters getting big. Remember this is all IN MY OPINION, so odviously things will need correcting:

"I don't think it will get big to be honest. Skateboarding got big because back then people got into it because it was fun and it was more of a 'true' sport. It went hand in hand with the culture of surf/hippy/punk. If you wanted to be one of those you had to be a skateboarder. The surfer/hippy/punk stereotype fell onto %75 (or so) of youth, so everyone wanted to do it. Corporate company realized they could cash in on it so thats how it got big.

Times have changed. We don't have the numbers. No corporate company is going to sponsor/advertise us (unless they are wanting to take a risk which does not happen in big business).

It's a diffrent time. Scooters HAD an opportunity to be big. But in my honest opinion Razor butt fucked it for a quick buck. They could have gone for the long term and taken a risk and marketed (corretly marketed that is) at a 14-20 age group rather then 8-12. Ever wondered why someone says "haha aren't scooters for kids? why don't you ride a MANLY bike or a MANLY skateboard?" Well that because razor decided to market it at little kids.

So, as much as I love this sport if you want to go somewhere I just don't think its going to happen. Choose a diff sport if you want to be doing this for a living.
There's my little rant. lol."

This little paragraph is about something that ticked me off for a long time.
Trends. Yes. The thread has been made before but I just want to say something 'bout it - it anoys me for some reason and it's unresonable for me to say this but fukit.

Stop riding wide bars, stop trying to copy the BMX style, stop doing the same tricks.
Ok, cool. You like the feel of wide bars. The BMX style is your style, the same tricks are the only tricks you know?
Well fuck, do something different, that's all I'm saying. Want to know why some videos look 10 steps above yours? Because it's not the same crap over and over.

Just one more thing. Ride for fun. Something that I think eludes so many of you and you don't focus on. Who cares if you can't land a trick, just do something new or weird. Think up something odd and have a laugh while your doing it. I see videos of kids throwing their scooter and having a whine because they can't land a fingerwhip - ride for fun.

I pretty much only plan on making one more video, maybe you will like it. Maybe not. It's not going to be a normal video I guess. I'm not saying this like "OH MI GOSH EVEYRONE WANTS TO WATCH MY VIDEOS" im just saying it beacsue I am.

If anyone wants to request a tutorial do it now.

If you still want to chat to me - I'm on Myspace or Youtube. I don't really like people talking to me on MSN - I've blocked almost everyone in the "scooter" group of it. So.

To people on YT: If you don't like Bass Guitar unsubscribe now. Cause thats probably the only videos I'm going to be making.

To Jordan Jasa: You the fuckinng man kid. You probably don't even know but I look up to you man. You just seem like a gnar person

To Alex Steadman: cheers for the inspiration in your videos bro.

To Andrew B.; your the man for setting up this site. Yeah, I often baged it but that was for laughs man - there were aspects of this that pissed me off but because of this I've met tons of great people and had a few good laughs. It inspired me to progress further and for that I thank you.

To the people I pissed off on this site: Mission accomplished.

To the rest of SR: fucck you all, little bastards.
=)

haha thats a terrible perspective on it.

Now that college has hit, ive learned that i can still find time to ride scooters for fun and have a very social life.
I dont think many people understand riding, such as yourself. If you truly love it you shouldnt worry about anything. Its fun, and a great way to escape from life. Ive finally stopped caring about trick progression and "sponsorships" and whether or not i can make an impact on the sport. Sure, id love for each of those things to happen, but now i realize, more than ever, that riding is something that i just am passionate about. Just to be on my scooter riding from class to class makes me a little bit happier.

Sweet. I actually enjoyed reading that because it was less violent on individuals and that you expressed your opinions without bashing some specific directly to the ground. The way you think is original, and i appreciate that you have shared your thoughts with us and i hope i will still see some of them appearing in the future.

And, don't worry about the social life. You'll defenetaly have more, only time will tell when.

And i beleive in scooters getting big. It will take a lot of time no doubt, but it is going to happen. A few years back there weren't that many tech specialists that designed scooters for real destructive freestyle riding, but as older freestyle scooter riders are growing up and maybe even studying engineering/mechanics - if they are still motivated, then they will design better parts. Having better parts mean more market and that only leads to a link where you must have some relationships with investors. The key is to get the investors see the potential of the scootering scene so they would realise that if they would invest into scooters now they would be in the right place at the right time. Motivation is the key that drives the scootering scene bigger, and i can say i haven't lost that motivation. Scooters will go bigger eventually. It's what i believe in.

This is honestly one of your only posts that have actually made sense to me..
I feel very much the same about most of the issues raised. I can see scooters becoming bigger though, and when they do, i'll be there to throw my hands up and say i was there in the 'beggining', as such. But scooters are going to take longer to get anywhere, the big companies, that people know of, aren't willing to do much to make the sport progress..
If you asked a 30 year old parent of a 5 year old, to name one scooter brand, they are going to say Razor, or Micro, depending on where they are.
But the only big companies that are trying to get the sport out there are run by people who can't get the message out as well as razor and micro, because hardly anyone knows they exist.
If you now went and asked a 30 year old parent of a 5 year old, if they knew about the brands French ID, Wee sooters and 'SR' parts, you'll get negative answers every time.
The thing i'm trying to get across i guess is that, until someone with power in the industry starts to make a decent effort, its not going to go too far.

Great going out post though Derek, nice to see some sense from you, and not trying to blatantly piss people off..

lol. this is what im like in person more so, if you were around before i started being a nobjockey then you'd know. i dunno if you were or went.

@ the rest of your post though (this is going to be REALLY hard to understand but bear with me):

I may be missing what your saying - but

The reason why I don't think scooters are going to get far is because you look at (some) skateboard companies - it may not look like it but they are stugling to make cash (i'd love to link you to the video i watched about inside companys but i dont have the link) and if thats a skateboard company (correct me if im wrong but thats the 2nd most popular sport in the USA?) and thats trying hard to make cash i can't see how a scooter company is going to do it. How is a scooter company going to get the funds to send scooter riders around the world and pay them for it? Which is essentually what needs to happen in order for OTHER companys to come out and pay them (who is going to sponsor a person that only rides skateparks in the same town? they want peeps that travel the world). i highly doubt a competiion is going to pay for peoples airfaies just to go to their comp.

For scooters to get big you'd need a big rider population - can that happen? Yes, yes it can. Youtube has probably been the best way of marketing scooters out (and - which is why if you talk to me on YT im much less of a dickhead.. i dont want to leave a bad impressiion on this sport) and is also why i do How To videos.

Ok great, we can get a big base of riders (which will be hard to do since all people will think during those videos is 'wow how gay' except the 8-13 age group... now you might say 'nah' but I mean I don't know that many 17 year olds that JUST started riding do you?). So we now have a bunch of 8-13 year olds riding.. thats cool but how marketable/profitable to a business is that? probably not verry... and yes they will grow up and get better but what im saying is its adding to the steriotype that scooters are for little kids. If we have a group of little kids riding then no big comp is going to want to put scooters in the X-Games or Dew Tour. To me it just does not seem marketable.

Haha, i'm probably one amongst about 30 others on this site that that post would've made sense to.

I'm pretty sure i was around, i've been around for just over 2 years now.
In response to that post, most of it is correct, but i think we just need to wait for the rider population to build up, scooters just had a massive burst of 10 or so year olds around here, and they're all pretty good, so whats to say in about 5 years time we don't have more and more people riding, well.
Its very much a pyramid scheme as such.
In the year 2001 there was probably about 20 people who were good enough to be idolised, if that.
The year now, 2008, there are at least 100 or so that can bring out a video full of bangers and make your jaw drop.
So at that rate, whats to say in 2010 there won't be at least 300 riders that are that good, representin the sport.
So now, those 300 riders ride in different cities, they inspire 50 or so kids to start riding, out of those 2 or 3 become great, then inspire 50 again.
So i guess, its just going to keep getting bigger and bigger.
Hopefully that wasn't too hard to follow.

1st bold - LOL. Never had a situation exactly like that. The only thing that comes close is if I have a trip (like vermont, or ohio) that I had planned beforehand. Even then, I still hang out with my friends way more than my scooter.

2nd bold - if you replace TV with campfire, that is one of the most fun things i can possibly think of. if you are looking for social interaction, the fire won't interrupt your conversation.

3rd bold - I do the same like ~5 tricks always. whips spins fingerwhips... i still have a great time when i do ride and i would like to assume i'm not hindering everyone else's riding. So what if people's videos might be "10 steps above mine" ? I would like to hope it is because of their talent not my repetitive-ness.

final bold - fuc.k you

it used to be we would pretty much plan next weekend the weekend before. it would be like we'd finsih riding for the day then on the trip back someone would be like 'yo whatsup fo next weekend?'. so yeah haha.

@2nd noo ahh thats not what im saying.

i mean when people make videos and they think its all epic and shit when its just the same video with a diffrent person and diffrent music then the next dude. my point here is not about if your have fun doing those tricks, its about the videos you make (and dibbs i watch your videos and you do more then 5 tricks haha).

maybe im the only person that sees it but i watch videos and its like 'bar spin tailwhip, finger whip, tailwhip, barspin tailwhip, 360, tailwhip barspin, 360 tailwhip' - but its just over something new like a little gap then a box then another little gap then on a gay flat line.

the point im trying to make is for people to progess their videos and be more original. not to improve your own riding. you can be of the same skill and film diffrent things.

man im so shiit at making points over the internet

well you cant make yourself love riding so just quit and im sure you will come back to it eventually, and if not than you will just move on alright. Ive always kept a decent balance between riding and having a life...its not that hard to do. Ride when your bored/need excersize/are depressed, etc. and when you have plans with friends ditch yo scoot <3
