AVCHD format?

anyone here ever use this format for editing?

i was told that its a special codec that only Sony uses, and ive had alot of trouble just importing any footage into my computer because of this.

I have to use sonys programs that i must say are complete shit to do this with and when i import the clips it shows them as pictures then it says that they are corrupt like 5 seconds later.

would i need a different driver?
or would any one know of a different way to use AVCHD formats with editing software?

but it's not the same codec/driver.

it always corrupts while im editing or sometime just cant read it.

My camera always makes the program freeze or some shit like that when i am putting it on the computer. probly because i have a shitty movie maker and a sony camera.

Theres nothing wrong with Sony cameras.

Since i didn't back from John yet, im gonna guess your capping with a USB cable and some Sony software made for the cable. Invest in a firewire+firewire card. Quality will be lossless and you can cap in AVI instead of those goofy formats.

as long as you invest in a quality card, so do your research before you go buying some 10 cent card from china. check to make sure that the chipset is gonna be compatible with you editor (shouldnt be a problem if your buying one from a electronics store). and get a monster cable if you can, they are the makers of the highest quality cables and wires you can find.

well first of all, the camera is a Sony HDR-SR1, a 30 GB hard drive camera that uses high def.
The software it came with wasnt for the cable or anything, it was sort of like a program that allows you to access the hard drive and either import footage and pictures or burn them to a disk. But when i import any video clips it treats them as pictures and then they get corrupted.

im just trying to figure out if there is an easier way to do all this without using sonys shitty players, or if i should just try and get an HDV cam that uses tapes instead

Yeah it doesn't. Have you tried Adobe Premiere Pro 2, im almost 100 percent sure its designed for editing HD footage so maybe it won't have a problem with your files. If that fails, i would try to get a different camera that uses tapes and firewire since its more reliable, i would go for somthing 3ccd too since you paid over 1000 for that thing and its that CMOS sensor stuff.

yeah im getting adobe premiere 2 so i'll try to see if it works with that, and if not its back to tapes.

i still hope i can return the cam and get some $$ back if it doesnt work though haha.

the reason you have that gay codec compressing it is because its a hard drvie cam and it wants to save space by compressing it. if your lucky then there might be a way to change settings and make it record raw footage (aka .AVI).

this computer was such a pile of shit that it didnt recognise the cameras footage.

i got it all worked out and now i can save it in mpg format instead of that crap it was in before.
