Wide bars help with control, but don't go straight to 20", get like 16" or something. That's a good medium between control and still being able to bar and stuff pretty easily.

20" really helped me with riding backwards and manuals for one, I agree that they give you so much more control. It also makes the scooter to me feel more bikeish then scooterish, if that makes sense.

if you want to ride something that feels really bikish ride a bike

and you can get pipes at any hardware store
1/2 in. diameter
but put an old bearing on the front axel
 
i just made some 18 wides and i was riding them and i fell in love with them alot better control and makes everything look more bmx like and stylish however i went back to my 1 piece 14.5 wides and they felt like little retard stubbs but i got back used to it
