It's so you can tighten down the wheel as hard as you can and the bearings won't get squished in. You should definitely run them.

Hell, my swiss 6balls exploded in my back wheel and I had a spacer in.
But they lasted pretty long.
Yeah run a spacer or the bearings will pinch and eventually break/seize up.

It also helps to keep your bearings aligined, plus having your wheel tight means that your wheel wont have to rattle around for it to go fast
