i used a spare crossbar and a hammer and it worked wonders. and to make sure that i had it in straight i put the compression bolt in the starnut to use as a guide

the way i do it is amazing, idc wat anyone says:

get the starnut(right way up obv), put the bolt in(headset bmx one the short one) lay it on top of bars, hammer till the edges are almost in, then keep banging it till it goes in and straight, and with the bolt going up you can keep it straight easier

You can get a socket the same OD as the ID of your bars, but this as well as banging on anything other than the threads will weaken the star nut. That is my experience at least.

I made a little tool that I can post if you want. It make it so you hammer the thread and not the gripping stars. It uses a socket, couple washers, bolt, and nut. Let me know if you want a picture or something.

30 minutes later:

Goodness I've posted too much today... Mine is similar to this, but I welded it together. I should have tried it before I welded, but I didn't. This general idea should work if you try it out and make a few changes. I'll try to find mine sometime and post a picture. I love the tool though. It makes easier to start it straight as well as hammering it in perfectly straight.

Materials:
I used a 13/16 ALLTRADE Socket
1/4" Fender Washer, for bottom. Mine was slightly loose, but I welded anyways. Read below about 1/4 vs 6mm.
6mm Washer, for top.
6mm x 1.0 bolt longer than the socket
6mm x 1.0 nut

The reason I used 6mm hardware is because my 1 1/4 star nut has 6mm x 1.0 pitch thread. Make sure you don't force the wrong thread in! I've seen many people use a 1/4", but that is nearly two hundredths larger than 6 mil and has standard thread!

Hopefully this helps someone out. If anyone puts one together let me know how it does! I want to know how it does unwelded!

I get charged $2. It only takes them a second. However, no bike shop around me can insert the star nut further than an inch. Their tools are designed to stop at a correct depth for bikes.
