I saw this thread and i was like: OMG SOMEONE ON HERE ACTUALLY READS QUALITY LITERATURE!
then i saw the comments and had an epic facepalm.

He felt as though he were wandering in the forests of the sea bottom, lost in a monstrous world where he himself was the monster. He was alone. The past was dead, the future was unimaginable. What certainty had he that a single human creature now living was on his side? And what way of knowing that the dominion of the Party would not endure forever?
He didnt die. He came to love Big Brother. But for the reader, his newfound happiness was a fate worse than death.

I know. And no, he was doubly aware of what was happening to him so coming to love big borther was the best thing that had ever happend to him and was dually the death of himself or "the gun at the back of his head" or however they said it.
