try just barely pressing the button, holding it barely pressed down until you see a green light, or a beeping sound, then you press down the rest of the way and it takes the pic instantly?

its usually just the flash charging up or the camera trying to focus

eidt: and i know absoultely nothing about cameras let some one with real knowledge help you

do what dibble said.... holding the shutter botton in half way framed where you want the picture it will set the focus then by pressing the shutter button all the way in it gets rid of most shutter lag

my camera (Kodak MC3) takes pics INSTANTLY so its really good for vert/in-air shots. u could maybe turn the flash off if u dont need it, as Matt said it could just be charging up but yeh just play around with ur cam one day and figure it out (i had that problem too with my mums camera)

edit: wooooot 3 stars :p
