hi guys Im asking a hell noob question here.... !dodge does compressing the file smaller reduce quality...and if it does how gay does it turn out??? :|

yeah it will reduce some quality, but it depends what kind of camera you have. but the differnce is not that big.

i usually dont even need to compress my stuff. I usually just have it all in uncompressed avi format then when i render i do WMV format... and it makes it a much more reasonable file size but there is definately a reduction in quality.

Q: Which will save the most quality? A- taking a movie in uncompressed avi to wmv... or B- Just compressing the avi file?

That basically makes no sense. Whatever your using to 'render' the file is compressing it if your quality is dropping.

oh kk...so it lowers quality....then instead of making it hell small file u want it about medium sized so it keeps quality and isnt huge...

That basically makes no sense. Whatever your using to 'render' the file is compressing it if your quality is dropping.

I can render it in uncompressed AVI and its full quality. But a huge amount of space is taken up. So if i want the file size to be smaller i can render it in a different format such as WMV. (which is reasonably sized). If i render it as uncompressed AVI then compressed it with Sorensen Squeeze (or any of the other ones) would it be better quality than just rendering as a different file format? I don't know if your understanding my question or not... so i tried to re-explain.

I dont understand what all this rendering buisness your doing is. Editiing process
-capture in full quality AVI
-edit your footage and render the footage to preview it
-export your video as full uncompressed avi
-compress with a program like sorenson squeeze to whatever format you desire
OR
-export your video and compress it at the same time by exporting it with some sort of format encoding codec (intel indeo, divx, windows media ect...)

i know what dibble means, when he goes to make the actually video he gets the options of what format to make it as, he is saying when he makes it as WMV for example it turns out smaller than AVI

Yeah I must mean export.

But with what you wrote.. you had both things down there.
Exporting and compressing at the same time (changing file format)
or
Exporting and then compressing with sorensen or other programs...

which saves more quality? or are they equal?

there exactly the same the only difference is that exporting uncompressed then compressing takes up space on your hdd in a hidden temporary folder. just export in a quality codec (i.e. h.264)

Well i use premiere 6 so the compression stuff built is isnt all up to date so i just export full quality (if i wanna burn it to a dvd soon ill have it uncompressed) and i can use more up to date compression with Sorenson...

Sorenson is a amazing program. I got a insane compression setting off SP, you can barely notice it have been compressed but it took a 30MB clip and compressed it to just under 1MB

Theres a free trial i think, but i think its one of them free trials where it puts a watermark on the video you compress. Dont ask where to get the full version on here though, thanks.

i think the best result is when you use x264 codecs and make it to mp4 ( its not that easy, will take you about 40 mins or something like that, my friend told its pretty hard to do it ) .. he showed me final result and it was amazing. and you can get the free trial from www.download.com i think. ( trial of sorenson
