Crown race problem

So the other day I broke my fork, and luckily I could get hold of another, but it doesn't have a crown race, (it's the really old nitro fork) so I tried to put the one of the old forks crown race on, but its really hard to get on, so should I use a lot of force and hammer the shit out of it, or try find another crown race?! Or can I ride without one?
Fast help would be appreciated as I need it for tommorow

Hammer the shit out of it applying equal pressure all the way around with a hammer and a screw driver.

if you are using a threadless headset you can cut a split in the race just like the top race.

I took Alex's advice and it worked, but cheers for telling me that billie, i would have never thought you could do that, might come in useful in the future :like:
