Unless you change your griptape once a week, then your argument is invalid. If you want to get all scientific on this, then yes, you may have less surface for griptape, but you'll have more mass per squareinch against the deck, thus still resulting basicly in the same friction.

Those aren't the final versions, they're deffinately prototypes, you can see how uneven the tapers are.
