filming with a mini dv camera

ok so im gonna film a edit with my sony trv-320. i have a usb firewire and tapes. do i just record onto the tapes and the firewire transfers them or do i have to do something special

you know how you can watch playback in vcr mode? when you plug in your camera and get to the capture zone you have to rewind all the way back to where you want to start capturing, and simply just play through the whole thing until you've run out of footy. then, you clean out all the bad clips and edit away
