flash

i want to get a flash for my d40, but i know nothing at all about flashes, so can anyone help me out?

i know i want something that i can get off camera, but thats about it.

Get Pocket Wizards. There not too expensive. Mike got one like 2 months ago and im pretty sure he likes it. Some people say they suck, but there just haters because they spent more money on expensive slave transmitters haha.

i would seriousley recommend getting a set of slaves before you go out and buy a pocket wizard.
oh yeah there arn't really settings on the slaves...just put the transmitter on the cameras hotshoe and the reciver on the flash, and your pretty much set..

next question. do you need to use pc cable's for a slave like the one brian posted, or can you just use hotshoe?

the slave is wireless.
it depends on one what you buy aswell. No cables, it's all wireless

you have to connect it to the camera/flash somehow. im just asking if you can connect it to the camera with hot shoe or if you need a pc cable.

You connect the one part (transceiver?) to the cameras hot shoe (i don't remember if you can connect a flash ontop of it or not so you can have an on cam flash), than the other transceiver thing onto the flash and you can put that into a tripod.

flash onto the reciever, transmitter onto the camera.. the transmitter connects wireless'ly to the reciever whcih fires the flash.
