How far are you pulling your body around BEFORE you hit the rail? If you are spinning 90 degrees onto the front board and trying a full 270 out then it will be really hard. It is a lot easier to do a fs hurricane style grind and then just throw your body the rest of the way as you hop out. If you land on your back wheel first then completing the rotation is easier. But do not lean too far back cos then you will fall on your arse like I always do.

maybe if you tried to do like a 180 to fakie feeble to 180. it doesnt hurt to try.
i can get like front board stalls to 270 really easy, but i can barely get normal front boards on rails.

do you think it would be easier to learn on a ledge first?

It feels different on a ledge, it involves a slightly altered approach. I personally find it a bit easier, but I had them on rails first. I would recommend learning it on rails first, only because if you learn it on ledges, you still might not be able to do it on a rail.
