Alfred Hitchcock used to say that a movie should start with an earthquake and then the tension should gradually grow. The first part of our story of the comp participation, the one which could be compared to the earthquake would be entitled 'Dude, where' is my passport?' (or 'Holy shit, where is that motherfucking passport'). But let's move on to the comp itself:
1.Practice: First I'd like to say that Martin Nogol is a totally awesome rider that would surely own ANYONE (possibly except Jesse) at any park comp, having such tricks like tailwhip dub fingerwhips from quater to bank or tailwhip backflips 100% CONSISTANT. As for me, I had to learn to ride a park that Ive never been to (moreover it's a BIKEpark, not a skatepark). What sucked is when I landed on the brake when trying a briflip to whip and snapped it while having no spare one, fortunately it was still ridable.
2.Qualifications: I ended up finishing 3rd behind Martin and Lukas Navratil, a little kid who was like a mix of Dan Warwick and Dylan Kasson (sounds impossible, I know), who could 360 a spine. My brother and MichaÃ?Æ?Ã?â??Ã?¢ââ??¬Ã?¦Ã?Æ?Ã?¢Ã?¢ââ?¬Å¡Ã?¬Ã?â?¦Ã?¡ Czybirow fell through but a girl who literally couldn't do SHIT advanced to semifinals.
3.Semifinal: I thought I did a great run with a back to back trick line (nosegrab over huge funbox - walltap out of a qp, which is what I learned just before - barspin over spine), I didn't advance to the semifinals. Instead among the five riders who made it there was some guy who could hardly do tailwhips (I think he ended doing bunnyhops ON the flybox in the final run), and another one whose only good trick was a whip over a spine. Not to mention that most people besides Martin and me did either 1 or 2 decent tricks in a run but spent rest of it doing stuff like flyout 360s, bailing or just simply lacking flow. You'll see in the vid when it's ready. So basically looks like the comp has been rigged just the same way as the TIC comp, favorising locals - even Martin said that I should have advanced.
4.Final - Didn't really care but no one really good - even Martin bailed once or twice, I think one guy (Jakub Wolf) had a decent run. The others didn't do very well, sometimes except one trick.
5.The K-Bike comp - It was definately interesting to watch, those scooters are hell to ride - like a bmx but with a skinny deck and no brakes. People who competed did mostly limbless trick flyouts, some of the better ones could do 360 flyouts. Martin won, doing tailwhips, a 360 x-up, a whip air, and throwing a backflip at the end.
6.'funbox' - flybox trick contest - I hoped Ill be able to clear the box but I was wrong. Ive tried barspin to dubwhips onto the top, no success because the launch was either weird or I just wasn't used to it. No one really did anything impressive besides the winner (guess who won?).
7.Other notable stuff - did some nice stuff in practice like stalling a hiching post way bigger than the one in the
Warsaw vid, barspin to whip and superman deckgrab qp to bank, walltap to barspin, tried whips over the big funbox (closest attempts were when cased with the back wheel, that box was really long though) and 360s over the spine (no success). My brother did a no footed deckgrab and a fingerwhip on a box (didn't see him landing it though). Lukas Navratil tried a 360 lookback over the spine.
Conclusion: The comp was definately fun, even though I couldn't understand most ppl (czech is not as similar to polish as it seems, and only one person spoke english decently) and the judging was rigged - the judges either favorised the locals or things like consistancy, flow and originality (NO ONE did any barspins in his run and no one tricked over the funbox) didn't matter, I have this strange feeling that I would place better if I went doing sketchy double and triple whips onto the tops of boxes, even if I bailed...
Im sorry if what I wrote was too egocentric but it's obvious that what the competitor cares about the most is his own performance. The comp video will be made for sure and maybe it will give you a more objective image of the comp.
