(?) good free file compressing or shrinking?

for pc. need to more or less half the size of my 2gb .avi file i usually use windows movie maker which does a really good job with shrinking file size but cannot afford the quality loss this time. anything?

I've never used it, but Brian always recommends Sorensen Squeeze.

if you import the movie into windows movie maker, and when you are saving hit like "save to file size"

just pick the file size you want.
definitely not the best option though.

Google 'windows media encoder' it compresses better than movie maker, but your limited to WMV. edit:for pc.

Theres also divx, which i think is free for both PC and Mac. If you have the money get a quicktime pro license if your on mac, i don't think their too expensive.

It upgrades your quicktime to quicktime pro and you can compress files with it.
