dude my jazz guitar teacher was telling me this exact same thing the other day, how its not all about noodling and shit like that but like its about how musical you are

pink floyd is a perfect example, no crazy fast solos, just slow absolutely fucking brilliant solos though

But i know what you mean man, i don't like playing fast and noodling all the time, i play blues and jazz and stuff too, its just the bands i listen to are mostly metal and there fast.

yea, i'm not even trying to say its because you're playing fast. it looks like you don't even wanna be there when you're playing. you just get nothing from it. watch petrucci play that solo. sure he might just be standing with a foot on his monitor playing, but you can just feel a charge from it. i believe its something that can only be attained from experience. i'm only now just starting to figure things out and i've been playing drums for 16 years.

just for all you non-musical kids on here, I'ma put it in everyman terms here. Think of it as being similar to getting style on a scooter. If you practice an instrument, for let's say 3 hours a day, solely for the purpose of getting really fast, etc. you're gonna develop no style. Style comes from actually sitting down, and just jamming and expressing yourself - even dicking around if you will. That's why a lot of jam band or blues musicians are way better to watch and listen to them play than all these virtuosos who just stand on stage and shred like robots. If you got no style, the music ain't gonna be fun to listen to.

its one of those things where you know it when you see it but you can't really describe it, like idk nate will probably say i haven't felt whatever the fuck he's talking about but like this one me and my brother jammed for like an hour and a half playing some jazz guitar just trading off solo and rhythm every once and a while and that was like the most awesome experience i've ever had playing guitar i was just so in the zone and into the music it was tight

Nice Mick. Learn the basics like timing, where the notes are, and chords. THen learn some simple thinsl ike Johnny Cash or U2.

Nate are you talking about having energy and feeling when you play? Because those are two very important things for a live show. I have been to shows and seen bands where the person with the most energy is the drummer! Which is sad because he cannot run around and whatnot. But I have also seen bands where the guitarist moves with the rythm and he gets into it and doesn't care. Even acoustic artists do it. They just sit on their stool and jam out and it is still entertaining to watch.
