I actually thing if something goes through something/has something sitting on top of it, it has more a chance of bending. I say this because the cross bar pushes up when you pull it down, but the thing on top pushes down on it and it has nowhere to go.

To put that in to perspective, imagine putting a thick stick over one side of an open vice and breaking it, then imagine tightening that vice not to the point thats its clamping the stick, but it's over the stick. When you pull down, the stick will touch the top of the vice, have nowhere to flex, and break.

Kind of a poor example. Just a theory.

i understand what you are saying in the first part, but i dont think the actual effect on bars is nearly as bad as you are thinking
