A recent thread made me think of this. And I've wanted to post it for a while.
I'm talking about you, the person reading this right now, how do you support the scooter scene as a community, as a whole?
I don't make parts or sell anything to other kids, but I do drive to parks all across New Jersey and chill with the locals. I've even hit up three or so Pennsylvania parks. Why do I do this? Why drive so far when I live walking distance from Hackettstown park? (Other than the fact that the manager bites a big one)
To get scootering noticed! I'm a 19 year old dude riding a decked out dialled scooter. When the locals see me, they get confused. They ask millions of questions about my parts, what tricks I can do etc. This obliterates the whole "kiddy toy/little kids snaking everyone" mantra everyone seems to have at these parks.
What do I do? I go ballistic. I throw every good trick I have and I answer every question they have to ask. Hell, I even let kids ride my spare scooter sometimes. They're probably used to shitty scooters like new As. When they ride one pieces, razor pros, metalcores, they get a different view of scooters in general.
I don't argue with the locals; because then I'd look like a dick. I am their guest, I respect their rules (sometimes ) because I am in their house now. I don't trash parks or smack talk, I simply wait my turn, throw some tricks, then chill. Talk with everyone else, compliment their tricks, etc. People respect that. When they see you on a scooter being chill, they will respect not only you, but they'll respect the sport aswell.
When people think scooter kid, they think 6 year old little snake riding a wobbly POS razor new A. When you ride up in a full set up, they normally ask simple questions, right? They don't know what an SCS is, or where to get these parts. I tell them everything they ask. How it works, where to get parts, etc.
This is why I go to these little parks everywhere.
I basically put on mini-demos wherever I go. Some parks I've been to where scooters aren't well known:
West Windsor, Hamilton (when the guard isnt there), Princeton, Nazareth, Stroudsburg, Sparta, Small Empire, Randolph, Hopatcong... the list goes on.
I know some major companies here that sell parts locally and do demos, that's the kinda shit we need. More big ride days where an ass ton of riders group up, invade some park and just chill.
Kinda got carried away but yeah. Hoping some manufacturers post in here or something.
