How to install a headset.

Before installing your headset, make sure you don't have the previous cups in the headtube.
If you haven't removed them, then the first 6 pictures of Eric's tutorial will describe you how to get rid of your old headset cups.

But, there are several kinds of ways to install a headset in.
One of them is the hammering which continues on the Eric's tutorial.
The other one is by making a headset press installer.

The advantages of this way of installing are:
- no hammering noise;
- 100x less risk to damage your cup, because hammering has a diffirent kind of pressure on cups;
- takes less time and patience;
- even your grandma could do it.

1. WHAT YOU NEED:

- thick long 5 to 6 inch bolt, diameter at least 1/2" (more than 120mm long, diameter at least 10mm).
- fit washers for the bolt
- oversized washers for the cups (outer diameter has to be bigger than the headset cups)
- maybe some "conversion" washers in case if the oversized washers' holes are too big for the fit washers.
- a nut for the bolt.
- wrenches. A socket wrench with a big handle will make your job easier.

2. PUT THE STUFF TOGETHER AND INSTALL ONE CUP.

DO NOT INSTALL BOTH CUPS AT THE SAME TIME, you can mess it up resulting as a crooked cup.

INSTALL ONE CUP ONLY and make all necessary adjustments while installing and relocating the bolt if needed, so the cup will slide in perfectly straight.

(thanks Bri for finding this animation)

3. INSTALL THE NEXT CUP.

After the first cup is perfectly totally in the headtube and looking straight,
then install the next cup following the same rules.

4. REMOVE THE HEADSET PRESS-INSTALLER AND...

.... and voilÃ?Æ?Ã?â??Ã?â? Ã¢â?¬â?¢Ã?Æ?ââ?¬Å¡Ã?â??Ã? , you have just installed your new cups into your headtube.
Now just add the other headset parts, your fork and bars and go ride.

very good method, i used to do that but with wood instead of washers and it worked great until i cut the bolt since i needed it for something else.

ugh, \/ \/ \/ just reminded me how much i love your scoot and fancy weld job :)

Very Nice, I did this when I installed my BMX headset. There is another tutorial online, basically that same thing. Good pics though.

he got his deep cup headset now and that will work with that neck because it goes in farther than the ovalized part, since he had ovalized his headtube

Yea, it wasn't my idea. I did what i had heard about a little but i couldn't think out right key words for it to find tutorials from Google, so i made the tutorial my own. Thanks, bri.

I got myself banned.
I wish i would have talked to Andrew before i installed my fsa, he told me about it after i started hammering and pressing the cups in with vice grips
